How the Angel Feels

Rebecca Newton (c) 2017

Angels they grieve for us every day
They come to help us from far away
They come and go and rarely stay
It’s a long way from heaven I suppose
I’m thinking they’re a long way from heaven

The simple deed an angel did for me
It taught me love and brought me grief
It’s the good deeds we do for each other
That makes me weep or run for cover

Now I know how the angel feels
When we look away, when we make our deals
And choose to stay under the wheel
Oh, now I know how the angel feels

It’s a long way from heaven
A long way from heaven
A long way from heaven
I suppose
A long way from heaven, such a
Long way from heaven
A long way from the heavens they call home

My holy friend, my friend who heals
One day you’ll know how the angel feels
I’ve come to suffer your sacred deals

Oh and if I had this life to live again
I’d find an angel and I’d make him my friend
I’d be pure brave no matter what
I’d do the work and I’d make the cut

It’s a long way to heaven
A long way to heaven
A long way to heaven I suppose
A long way to heaven
Such a long way to heaven
A long way to heaven from my home

It’s a long way to heaven
A long way to heaven
A long way to heaven I suppose
A long way to heaven,
Such a long way to heaven
A long way to the heavens from my home
Now I know how the angel feels

Blue Shirt

Rebecca Newton (c) 2018

Blue shirt
Sun face
Smile on, it’s a good good day
We sing
We play
We love the music days

Twin flames
Wax and wane
Never know when we’ll change lanes
Taking care
Are you still there?
You are everywhere, everywhere

We are so much more when we sing, when we play, I can
Feel it to my core, there’s a muse on the way, I know
She is my champion and I
Keep her close to me
She is beautiful

Small planes
Little trains
Monkey pants and big cat dances
Little man
What’s your plan?
Have fun as long as you can
You are beautiful to me

You’re beautiful, beautiful
You are beautiful to me
You’re everything
All around
You are everywhere with me

We are so much more when we sing, when we play, don’t you
Feel it to your core, there’s a muse on the way, I know
She is your champion
And I wonder if you see
You are beautiful

You dance
When you move
And you sure look good in blue
You are beautiful

You’re beautiful, beautiful
You are beautiful to me
You’re everything
All around
You are everywhere with me

You’re beautiful, beautiful
You are beautiful to me
You’re everything
All around
You are everywhere with me

Put on your shirt, sing in the sun
It’s a good, good day for everyone

When that Happens

Wes Collins – Whoompleytunes Music/ASCAP

The morning light is ugly through my eyelids
Something keeps on landing on my ear
Bowling shirt with someone else’s name above the pocket
Like to cut me clean in half the way it’s riding way up here

Sunlight bleaches the TV makes it hard to see the preacher
Got to get some curtains for this place
Bottle cuts a sundial on the table
Still a little left I haven’t poured into my face

but I
Like it when that happens
It’s not the freshest start but it’ll do
Oughta be enough to get me over
We can start right in forgetting you

Every couple days I make it all the way around the clock
I don’t get up to eat or even move
Folks I used to hang out with are getting a little worried
Worried or pissed off I kinda doubt that they approve

but I kinda
Like it when that happens
Evening comes around before I do
Takes some getting used to eatin’ breakfast in the dark
We both get a break , me and you

Me and you, we never should have happened
You were quicker working that one out than I could ever be
Tutoring myself here under cover
Hasn’t sunk in yet but it will eventually

And I like it when that happens
Settles in to stuff that I can see
Cigarettes and magazines and ass prints on the sofa
Haul it up and shake it off of me
Leave ‘em there and find a place to be

Like it when that happens…

Old Louise

Rebecca Newton (c) 2018

I always loved you good, old Louise
Just like a daughter would, old Louise
And I still love you good, old Louise

You always taught me right
Just like a mother might
I took to every word you said
They live inside my heart and head
Louise

You’d sing and make a joyful sound
“There is a Tavern in the Town”
We would sing another round with you,
Old Louise

Sure told a story well
As anyone could tell
You’d follow up with one more beer
And now and then I raise a cheer to you,
Louise

You took me as I am, Old Louise
And I sure could make you laugh,
I sang you through your final breath
Right by your side until you left
From our beginning to your end, you were good to me,
Louise

I sang as long as God allowed
“There is a Tavern in the Town”
I’ll always sing another round for you,
Old Louise, old Louise, Our Louise

I Don’t Mind Much

Rebecca Newton (c) 2017

Ooooh Ooooh Oooohh
In between our songs, she pulled me right beside her
She locked our arms and leaned in like a mama might
Up against my cheek, my confidant, confider
We were a little drunk that night

She told me how you spoke with kindness and affection
She noted overtones of love
You told her how it started years ago between us
Back when we couldn’t get enough
And how you sailed across the ocean in our first year
And all those letters that we wrote
I sent you magazines, a denim shirt with buttons
You sent me postcards from the boat

I never said, but I didn’t like your books in piles
Or the scent that they would leave
And though I filled the empty spaces with many smiles
I found you awfully hard to please

Those 40 years they came and went like they were nothin’
Like nothin’ happened in that time
And I don’t mind much we couldn’t make it last forever
The fault was never yours or mine

Now I don’t mind that you remember us so kindly
And I don’t mind that sometimes I still take the blame
It doesn’t matter that we never see each other
You know to me it’s all the same

And I don’t mind about the book piles any longer
I bought some rugs to cover lines upon the floor
I guess you noticed that I kept your name as my name
And I’m thinking, you don’t mind much anymore
No, we don’t mind much anymore

I don’t mind anymore, I don’t mind anymore

To the Man

Rebecca Newton (c) 2017

I just love a man
I love to watch him fly
And notice where he lands
And doesn’t wonder why
He’s sometimes far away
He does the best he can
I really love a man

I just love a man
The way I love a dog
How he sits and stands
The way we get along
I love to watch him think
I love to watch his hands
I just love a man – I really love a man

A man has his moments
He can shine, like a full moon on the great big sea
Some days he doesn’t say much
And that’s just fine, you know it’s all right by me

A man has his moments
He can shine, like a full moon on the great big sea
Some days he doesn’t say much
And that’s just fine, you know it’s all right by me

I’ve had one or two
Well maybe more than that
I guess it’s quite a few
But, I have no regrets
I loved them, every one
It’s simply who I am
I just love a man
I really love a man

Come On River

Rebecca Newton (c) 2015

Come on, Biscuit
We’re hitting the road
The river is a callin’
We can’t say no

My Shortie’s in the car,
The boat’s up on the rack
Got my wadin’ boots on
And goodies in the sack

Come on river, just us three
Come on river, hound dog n’ me
In a Chatham county mile we’ll be going down the Haw
Goin’ down the river, just me n’ my dog

Goin’ down the river, rollin’ down the river
Goin’ down the river, just me n’ my dog

We’re gettin’ near the water and
It’s not long now
We’ll be low in the stern
We’ll be high in the bow

Like a pig in the dirt
I’ll be happy as a hog
When we’re scullin’ down the river,
Just me n’ my dog

Come on river, just us three
Come on river, Biscuit n’ me
In a Chatham county mile, we’ll be scullin’ down the Haw
Sculling’ down the river, just me n’ my dog

Goin’ down the river, down the old Haw river
Goin’ down the river, just me and my dog

If I Had Wings

Rebecca Newton (c) 2016

If I had wings
I’d fly and I’d sing
And cherish the view I’d have of you
To show you my love
I’d circle above
‘Tween you and the sun
‘til day was done
If I had wings.

If I were the sea
I’d cradle your sleep
And keep you in sight all through the night
To show you my love
I’d send out the dove
And care deep for you
As deep as my blue
If I were the sea

If I had you, God only knows
What I would do, if I had you

If I were the moon
I’d shine bright on you
No matter your where, I would be there
To show you my love
I’d tarry above
And follow along
Give you a song
If I were the moon
God only knows, what I would do
If I had you

Starlight

Jonathan Byrd – Jonathan Byrd Music SESAC

He held a toothpick ‘tween his teeth, a mischievous carpenter
She boarded the train and gave him a kiss,
a tentative wanderer

Star light, star bright, you’re the only star I’ve got tonight
Star light

He stroked her hair and showed her the dough
no more than a bargainer
She followed him back to the sleeping car
oh St. Christopher

Star light, star bright, you’re the only star I’ve got tonight
Star light

That’ll get you all the way to Thunder bay
Wait outside the Finlandia
I know a man who’ll give you a room
You don’t have to work for him

Star light, star bright, you’re the only star I’ve got tonight
Star light

Train kept a chugging on through St Paul
Her face in the window
Drinkin’ black coffee and cuttin’ her hair
On the white linoleum

Star light, star bright, you’re the only star I’ve got tonight
Star light

The Courage of Your Love

Rebecca Newton/Jude Johnstone Mad Jack Music/Sajak Music, BMI

Once so fresh, just 6 and 4
We made up songs on our walk to school
Songs of the sun, and songs of clouds
We’d sing softly, we’d sing loud

And I, an aspiring bon vivant,
Some day a French accent and floor length gown
But you chose the fight, you could not stay down
While I held my breath, didn’t make a sound
You took the punches in every round
I was afraid, I stayed close to the ground
I came back up, with the courage of your love

We’d sing and dance and drink we had our fun
And we learned in this world we are not alone
All the rest, I guess, it’s just history
We didn’t fall in love with our misery

We’ve earned peace in our setting suns
We’ve done all right, as well as anyone
I’m all grown up and still making songs
And I know my life, and your life, were never wrong
‘Cause I wouldn’t have known the courage of your love
We made it through with the courage of your love
I thank you for the courage of your love

Welcome

Sam Frazier

If the water in this wishing well was almost crystal clear
Then another path you beat from home is a shortcut back next year
And if a single splash can send a wish rippling through the atmosphere
I’ll be skipping coins to you
You’re always welcome here

Rippling through the atmosphere

If a halo is your headlight, a tail should help you steer
And if they’re perched upon your shoulders, they’re whispering in your ear
If your demons get too personal, and need some more to fear
From you

You’re always welcome here

Rippling through the atmosphere

We spread the best memories around
Welcome here
And we melt the rest down

‘Cause no nest of souvenirs can fill this empty room ‘til I raise a cheer
To you

Rippling through the atmosphere
Here’s to you
Rippling through the atmosphere
Here’s to you
Rippling through the atmosphere

Quiet Girl

Jude Johnstone – Mad Jack Music/Sajak Music, BMI

I’m a quiet girl now
Standing in the rain
Got a head full of sorrow
That I can’t explain
And a vision of you
Running through my brain
I’m a quiet girl now
Standing in the rain

Bought a one way ticket
Now I can’t get back
Fell in love with you baby
Before I even packed
Now I’m staring down
An empty track
Bought a one way ticket
Now I can’t get back

Quiet girls know better
Than chasing down a dream
Quiet girls know that a love is never
No it’s never what it seems

I’m a quiet girl now
But I’m wide awake
Took a shot at love
But it didn’t take
And a foolish heart
Isn’t hard to break
I’m a quiet girl now
But I’m wide awake

Quiet girls know better
How to rise above it all
Quiet girls know that a love is never
No it’s never like the fall

Quiet girls know better
Than chasing down a dream
Quiet girls know that a love is never
No it’s never what it seems

I’m a quiet girl now
Standing in the rain
Got a bucket of tears
But I can’t complain
Because I loved you baby
Like a hurricane
I’m a quiet girl now
Standing in the rain
I’m a quiet girl now
Standing in the rain

Footsteps

Barry Gray

Train running through my chest
Don’t want to be like all the rest
I’ve got to make my footsteps heard
Can’t just walk around one foot on the ground
I have to make my footsteps heard

Say little boy please look to me
You think I’m happy, think I’m free
Well I work from nine to five
And all I get are pains straight through my brain
It’s time to make my footsteps heard

I feel I’m staring at the wall
I see no change but hear the call
I’ll head your way just say the word
Just give the sign I’ll be on time
I wanna make my footsteps heard

Hey Preacher man you know the way
You say that God is here today
I feel I’m dying in this world
I have to hold my breath and grab my chest
How can I make my footsteps heard

I’m traveling down this lonely street
When I notice my old feet
Well they’re soft as soft can be
I need a loud pair of shoes to chase away these blues
So I can make my footsteps heard
